Blastocystis hominis - Cyst from fresh stool - TEM. Below the thick surface coat is a multilayered cyst wall surrounding the cell which is 3.7- 5 microns wide. Lipid-like and glycogen inclusions are present in the condensed cytoplasm and there is usually only one nucleus with typical condensed crescentic chromatin band. Mitochondria have an electron-opaque matrix and few cristae. This is the form thought to the transmissible stage which survives in the external environment protected by the cyst wall.
